About Jay Russell
Jay made the move from firefighter to home builder in 1977. His open, yet functional plans provided many homeowners with the kind and quality of product they were searching for. Vision, creativity, and attention to detail in his home designs soon led to Jay becoming a much sought-after home builder. To illustrate that demand, Jay Russell’s custom homes were considered by developers to be a necessity in almost every west-side subdivision of that era… developments such as Amarado, Briarwood, Cedar Park Chateau, Deer Trail, and Reflection Ridge.
What Jay was learning as a home builder in the mid 1980’s led to the next major change in his career. He was hearing and seeing that many home buyers were not fully satisfied with the overall “scope and feel” of the neighborhoods in which they were buying. He sensed they wanted subdivisions to be carved into the natural surroundings, not just cleared and leveled to make space for new homes. And, these buyers weren’t alone in that thinking…that was exactly the kind of home site Jay wanted for himself and his family.
One of his greatest strengths is his ability to listen to others—and listen he did. Armed with a vision and an understanding of Wichita, Jay opened his first development (Autumn Ridge) in 1987. Soon, additional J Russell developments followed, with Lost Creek (1990) serving as a prototype of the kind of property he was striving to provide. This development was tucked and wrapped around a quiet, meandering creek. The result: Lost Creek provided serene, country-like home sites, yet the residents were within walking distance of schools, businesses, and shopping.
Now having over thirty five years experience as a developer, Jay has been involved with over 50 projects throughout Wichita and Sedgwick County, and Jay currently oversees twenty subdivisions. Jay has always acknowledged that the buying public has a broad variance in “wants and needs.” To satisfy those variations, he has developed subdivisions with a diversity of price ranges. He also has long recognized that this variance in “wants” requires a broad spectrum of home builders.
